Concert by the Combined Pipe Bands of the Canterbury Caledonian Society

For over 100 years, Caledonian Pipe Bands have been there for Christchurch to mark special occasions, happy or sad. It is a tradition dating back to the Regimental pipe bands of the 17th Century and their role in leading regiments into battle. Performing in the trenches was finally banned in World War I but the practice lingered on into the battles of El Alamein and Normandy. The Caledonian Pipe Bands salute those who have passed on, and a peaceful future.

From Memory – Documentary Film about the Vietnam War

From Memory 2001, directed by Zoe Roland, is an evocative exploration of New Zealand Vietnam veterans' shifting perspectives on war and the reality of jungle warfare. Super 8 film footage and still images are woven together with candid accounts of the conflict. Veterans speak philosophically about the necessary evil of war, the post-war displacement they experienced and the resulting damage to the human psyche. From Memory has screened at international film festivals in the Netherlands, Germany, New Zealand and America and was a finalist at the New Zealand Media Peace Awards in 2002. This film contains graphic images.

The Film Archive and Radio New Zealand Sound Archives present King and Country

A programme of archival film clips ranging from 1900 to the 1970s will portray the experience of New Zealanders at war through evocative sight and sound. Rare footage will be presented in collaboration with sound clips from the Radio New Zealand Sound Archives. During World War II the New Zealand Broadcasting Service (NZBS) mobile unit recorded thousands of greetings from soldiers and nurses overseas, which were later broadcast at home. Many messages start with a big 'cheerio' to family members and friends and plenty of optimism for a short war and speedy return home. Lest we forget.
